Online Income Opportunities for College Students – Day Student,
Night Entrepreneur
By Lori Wilkerson
Online income
opportunities for college students are just as plentiful as
online opportunities for anyone else. After all, college
students are the most Internet savvy, computer-techno oriented
generation to come along so far – why shouldn’t they take
advantage of the Internet to earn money online?
College
students know more about going online than just about an adult
they’ll ever meet, simply because they’re grown up with it and
have it darn near hard-wired into their systems. Napster was
invented by a college student, remember? So taking advantage of
the Internet and the money making opportunities it offers seems
only fair for all those poor university students, doesn’t it?
The Good Old, Bad Old Days
Twenty years
ago if you were trying to pay your way through college or make a
little bit of money for pizza (and beer, let’s be honest, shall
we?), the opportunities were slim. Minimum wage jobs or
work-study programs, waiting tables, pumping gas and a few other
less than great jobs. Students didn’t have much choice, though,
since their schedules interfered with any real opportunities and
they still needed the money. If you were in high-school trying
to earn gas money or trying to cover car insurance it was even
tougher – curfews, sports practice, and homework.
Students today
have discovered there’s a better way – the Internet provides a
million and one opportunities to earn money without ever leaving
the dorm, apartment or home. No gas needed, no tacky uniforms,
no minimum wage, no schedules to juggle. Online income is earned
whether you’re there or not, and you update your website, check
your statistics and answer emails at your own pace. If you are
selling on the Internet, you check in according to the auction
schedule. If you are an affiliate, you check in with your
advertisers. You find a niche, and you fill it. (The article,
“Making Money with Homebased Business – Staying Focused,” talks
more about finding a niche and working with it.)
There’s no
driving home exhausted late at night, no having to work long
hours during finals week. Making money on the Internet is done
on your own schedule – and that’s very important when you’re in
college!
Let’s compare:
- John studies until dinner, then rushes to the pizza
place where he works until closing on Friday night at 1:00
am. He comes home tired and cranky. He makes minimum wage
and has to work most of the weekend because his class
schedule is heavy this semester. He’s worried about finals,
when his boss says they’ll have lots of deliveries and will
want him to work overtime. He also stinks like burnt pizza
dough.
- Rick
studies until dinner, then checks out his website. There’s
been some good traffic this week, and he makes a note to add
a new article the next day. They usually take about an hour
to write, and he tries to add three a month. He checks his
stats with his affiliates, and sees that enough products
have sold to net him about $400 this month. He answers
emails from visitors, which takes him an hour. He goes out
for pizza with friends and says “Hi” to John before heading
to a party at a friend’s place. He estimates he’s working on
his Internet website about three to four hours each week. He
thinks after finals he’ll add another advertiser, which
should increase his income to about $650 each month. If he
put in more time, he’d have the opportunity to earn more,
but he likes the freedom.
Online, a
student is a business owner whether he’s a freshman at
university or in his final year of medical school. When he
graduates, he can already have a nest egg and a great resume –
he owns an online business, he has an income and he’s turned
some great opportunities into successes already.
